Challenger is very popular among the Brittish breweries where thanks to its high content of alpha acids it can be used both for bittering, flavor and aroma. Has a flowery and slightly spicy aroma and flavor

Commonly used in porter, stout, ESB and bitters.

Released to the public in 1972, Challenger was devoloped in Kent by the Wye College. It is a cross between Northern Brewer and the German hop Zattler.

Aroma: Flowery, citrus and slightly spicy.

Origin: England

Typical values:
Alpha acid (correct alpha value is printed on the package): 7 - 9 %
Cohumulone: 20 - 25 %
Total oils: 1,0 - 1,7 ml / 100 g
Storage stability (alpha acids): Very good, 70-85% alpha acids remaining after 6 months at 20 °C
Possible replacements: Perle, Northern Brewer, Target, Admiral
